Summer Weather Tips for the Elderly

It’s official! It’s the hottest day of the year so far! As temperatures soar above our usual gloomy English weather, don’t let elderly people suffer when there’s hot weather this summer. Keep an eye out for dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The elderly are particularly sensitive to heat so we’ve put together a quick list of some easy-to-follow tips to bear in mind during this mini heat wave.

  1. Avoid the heat: make sure elderly friends, family and neighbours stay out of the sun and don't go outdoors between 11am and 3pm.

  2. Have cool baths or showers and drink cool drinks regularly. If you care for elderly people, make sure they do the same!

  3. Make sure elderly neighbours have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications.

  4. Drop by on neighbours during the summer and make sure windows are shut and shades are pulled down when it's hotter outside. Make sure rooms are well ventilated throughout the day.

  5. Elderly folk need to be dressed appropriately with high SPF suncream and lightweight loose clothes.
